When Was Lexus Founded?

While the Lexus brand is owned by Toyota, each brand operates independently of each other. Lexus has its own headquarters in Nagoya, Japan, and operates its own centers for design, engineering, and manufacturing. You can read a brief history of the Lexus brand below:

  • 1983 — Toyota started Project F1 (short for Flagship One) to aim to build the world’s best car, based on a challenge set by chairman Eiji Toyoda.
  • This project lasted several years and included market research in Laguna Beach, California, studying the lifestyles of wealthy Americans.
  • 1989 — Project F1 was finished, resulting in the launch of Lexus, a new luxury brand under Toyota focused on international markets and a network of 81 new Lexus dealerships in the United States.
  • January 1989 — The Lexus LS 400 debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with a 4.0L V8 gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive, and its release shook up the luxury sedan market. Critics were impressed by the quality, performance, aerodynamics, comfortable interior, and more.
  • 2019 — After debuting many more vehicles and weathering the storms of international recession and more, the ten millionth Lexus is sold.
