How to Charge a Hybrid Car

2022 Lexus RX Hybrid

As the hybrid vehicle becomes more of a permanent fixture in the Town 'N' Country area, everyone from daily commuters to occasional drivers are showing an increasing interest in trading in their normal gas-powered ride for green technology. Some drivers, however, are still concerned about the possible disruption a hybrid could bring to their driving habits, especially when charging a hybrid car battery. The charging method for a hybrid automobile will differ depending on whether it is a regular hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, or a full-electric vehicle. In the guide below, we help Brandon drivers by showing them how to charge a hybrid car battery.

How to Charge a Hybrid Car Battery vs. Plug-In Hybrid vs. EV

We’ve gotten plenty of questions from Riverview drivers about how to charge a hybrid car battery. The answer isn’t as simple as most think – you have three options, depending on whether you’re charging a standard hybrid, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), or a full electric vehicle (EV). If you understand the differences between them, selecting the one that suits your needs becomes much easier.

  • Standard Hybrids: When hybrids first hit the scene, the standard was the ambassador that introduced the world to this technology. Regular hybrid models use the electric motor alongside the internal combustion engine. These require no charging from you at all – the battery stays powered as you drive throughout the day.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles: The PHEV has been one of the fastest-growing categories of vehicles in the last two to three years. These leverage the power of both the electric and combustion engine. However, these can rely on power from the electric motor for a specific number of miles, otherwise known as the vehicle’s electric range. It’s worth noting that a PHEV cannot self-charge, meaning you’ll need external power from an at-home dock or public charging station.
  • Electric Vehicle: A fully-electric vehicle operates solely on electricity, containing no gas engine. These vehicles must also be charged using either an at-home or public charging station.

Charging a Hybrid Car Battery: Three Primary Methods

Many drivers prefer the versatility of the PHEV because simple errands to local destinations can be completed using full electric mode. However, long road trips are still possible because of the gasoline function. Charging a hybrid car battery is as easy as using one of the following three methods:

  • Portable Stations. All PHEV models come with factory equipment and a portable cord that works with any household 120-volt outlet. These come in handy during emergencies or during longer trips – but there’s a downside. These chargers are painfully slow.
  • Home-Fast Stations. If you can afford it and have the capability, a home-fast station is the best way to go. You’ll be able to recharge your car at a substantially faster rate, making these well worth the investment. You’ll also need 240-volt capability somewhere in or around your home.
  • Public Charging. Public stations are designed for quick stops along your commute and are typically housed at department stores or gas stations. These stations continue to rise, and they charge your vehicle faster than any of the other methods.
